Art Blocks, a leading platform for generative on-chain artwork, announced a significant breakthrough: 90% of its NFT pieces can now be viewed directly via the Ethereum blockchain without reliance on the company’s backend support.
Since its launch in 2020, Art Blocks has been creating generative art on Ethereum, but until now, viewing the works online required Art Blocks’ backend generators. With this update, the majority of Art Blocks projects are now fully on-chain, ensuring perpetual accessibility as long as Ethereum exists, regardless of Art Blocks’ operational status.
The achievement primarily applies to artworks created using p5js and threejs, the tools behind most Art Blocks projects. The remaining 10% of pieces still rely on third-party tools for visualization.
In a blog post marking Art Blocks’ fourth anniversary, founder Erick Calderon described the move as a “major leap forward,” emphasizing the significance of this milestone in reshaping how art is created, collected, and preserved.
“You’re no longer dependent on Art Blocks or any other platform,” Calderon stated, highlighting the platform’s commitment to on-chain infrastructure as a vital step toward revolutionizing art history.
While Art Blocks will continue to use a centralized generator for primary online viewing, this achievement underpins its mission to establish generative art as a permanent, blockchain-native medium.
