Deutsche Telekom, Europe’s largest telecommunications provider, will soon begin mining Bitcoin, according to an announcement made by Dirk Röder, Head of Web3 Infrastructure and Solutions at Deutsche Telekom-owned subsidiary T-Systems MMS, at the BTC Prague conference on Friday.
“Since 2023, we have been running a Bitcoin node and Bitcoin Lightning nodes,” Röder stated, proudly wearing a shirt featuring a pink Bitcoin graphic styled after Deutsche Telekom’s logo. “And with a heart full of pride, I would like to let you in on a little secret: we will engage in ‘digital monetary photosynthesis’ soon.”
When Bitcoin influencer Joe Nakamoto pressed Röder for clarification, asking, “So is T-Mobile mining Bitcoin?”, Röder confirmed, “We will.”
Deutsche Telekom’s involvement in the crypto sector is not limited to Bitcoin. The company has been actively participating in various blockchain initiatives. In 2022, it expanded its support to Ethereum by running validator nodes and collaborating with liquid staking protocol StakeWise, joining its governance DAO. Additionally, Deutsche Telekom has been operating nodes and making direct investments in the Polkadot and Celo networks.
The company’s other notable partnerships include running a validation node for Polygon and supporting the Q and Chainlink blockchain networks, showcasing its comprehensive engagement with the blockchain ecosystem.
