Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has “adopted” Moo Deng, a viral pygmy hippopotamus, with a generous donation of 10 million Thai baht (approximately $293,000 USD or 88 ETH). The donation will fund operations at Thailand’s Khao Kheow Open Zoo, the Wildlife Sponsorship Program, and the creation of a special exhibit for Moo Deng and her family.
Buterin’s contribution follows his visit to the zoo and his appreciation for the hospitality of Thailand during Ethereum events like the 2024 Devcon SEA conference. “On behalf of the Ethereum ecosystem, this is a gesture of friendship and gratitude to Thailand…and what better way than supporting Moo Deng, a beloved national and global celebrity,” Buterin wrote on X.
Khao Kheow Open Zoo expressed gratitude, pledging collaboration with Buterin to enhance the community experience.
Moo Deng, an endangered pygmy hippopotamus, has captured hearts worldwide with her playful antics. Her name, which translates to “bouncy pig,” was chosen through a public poll. Viral videos of the spirited animal, including her playful attempts to nip her caretakers, have elevated her to global fame in 2024.
Moo Deng has also inspired a memecoin of the same name, which reached a market cap of $270 million, although down from its $614 million peak. The coin is now on Coinbase’s listing roadmap, further solidifying Moo Deng’s status as a cultural and crypto icon.
