A pristine, first-edition 1999 Holographic Charizard Pokémon card, graded PSA 10, is set to hit the auction block, tokenized on the Ethereum scaling network Polygon. This card, valued at $250,000, is one of the most sought-after items in the collectibles world and will be auctioned by Courtyard, a blockchain collectibles platform.
In collaboration with Polygon Labs, Courtyard has tokenized the iconic Charizard card, which is securely stored in a Brink’s vault. The auction, running for 30 days, is designed to showcase blockchain’s transformative potential in the collectibles industry.
“This auction isn’t just about a Charizard card; it’s about showing how blockchain can revolutionize the collectibles world,” said Polygon Labs CEO Marc Boiron. “From traditional collectors to DeFi enthusiasts, we’re inviting everyone to experience the benefits of on-chain ownership.”
Courtyard’s platform allows collectors to own physical items via blockchain tokens (NFTs), offering features like secure storage, high-resolution 3D models, and global trading without the need for physical shipping. Owners can also request physical delivery of the card from the vault if desired.
Polygon Labs confirmed that the card was acquired directly from a trusted seller in the trading card industry. Similar Charizard cards have fetched prices between $264,000 and $400,000 in recent years, according to Public.com data.
“Tokenization is changing the game for collectibles,” said Courtyard CEO Nicolas le Jeune. “With this auction, we’re not just spotlighting an iconic card; we’re demonstrating how Courtyard’s platform is transforming how people collect and trade.”
This innovative auction is a landmark event, blending blockchain technology with traditional collectibles, and offering a glimpse into the future of how physical assets can be traded and owned on-chain.
