Lee Bok-hyun, the head of South Korea’s Financial Supervisory Service (FSS), has revealed plans to engage in discussions with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), with a particular focus on spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs), as reported by Hankyung on Monday.
According to Lee, he has met with SEC Chairman Gary Gensler and highlighted areas of interest, including virtual asset issues and spot bitcoin ETFs. These discussions signal a continued effort to address regulatory matters in the cryptocurrency space.
The decision to engage with the SEC follows earlier reports in December indicating Lee’s intention to meet with Gensler for the first time to discuss crypto regulation. The January meeting aimed to facilitate coordination between the two agencies and enhance cooperation.
Spot bitcoin ETFs have gained significant attention globally, especially after receiving approval in the U.S. for the first time following years of attempts by the financial sector. This development has prompted regulators worldwide to consider similar initiatives and evaluate the implications for their respective jurisdictions.
