Buenos Aires, the vibrant capital of Argentina, is set to launch a groundbreaking blockchain-based digital ID wallet with a strong focus on privacy, starting this October. This initiative, known as the Quarkid project (formerly Tangoid), aims to empower millions of citizens by enabling them to download a “self-sovereign” wallet for securely storing their essential documents, such as birth and marriage certificates, with plans to incorporate additional digital documents later this year.
Under the Quarkid system, Buenos Aires residents will have full control over their data, allowing access only to trusted and authorized third parties. The wallet will leverage Zksync Era, a zero-knowledge (ZK) Ethereum Layer 2 (L2) protocol, to enhance privacy and confidentiality through advanced mathematical proof techniques.
Extrimian, an Argentine blockchain services company with a focus on institutional applications, played a pivotal role in the creation of Quarkid. The project’s vision extends beyond Buenos Aires, with ambitions to offer this service to citizens throughout the entire country.
Guillermo Villanueva, CEO of Extrimian, underscored the importance of this achievement, highlighting that it represents a significant stride toward a more secure and streamlined future for government services in Latin America. Quarkid fosters a stronger connection between the government and its citizens, all the while introducing digital identity principles and security benchmarks to the Latin American landscape.
With the introduction of the Quarkid initiative, Buenos Aires aligns itself with the worldwide trend of leveraging blockchain technology to bolster the security and confidentiality of digital identities.
