A website that proposed a Pokemon NFT card game to users turned out to be a phishing platform.
The website that offered non-fungible token Pokemon-branded cards was used to spread malware to Pokemon fans and gamers. The announcement came from a cybersecurity company. The malicious website, which recently was still online, also boasted an NFT marketplace offering, displaying a link to allow users to purchase tokens. The website also featured an area for NFT staking and all its design was inspired by the popular Pokemon franchise.
The cybersecurity expert mentioned above is the South Korea-based company AhnLab. It shared the news with the public, warning users about the malicious website on the 6th of January 2023. AhnLab wrote that users were downloading a remote access tool instead of a game. This allowed perpetrators to gain control over their phones or PCs.
By using the app called ‘NetSupport Manager’, hackers could control the victim’s keyboard and mouse remotely, access the device’s history and file management, and even install additional malware.
The cybersecurity company advised users to use only official sources for downloading and buying new apps and avoid opening attachments from unknown sources.
