The creator of the Final Fantasy video game saga, Square Enix, has announced that it will invest into gaming on blockchain in 2023, according to a New Year’s letter from Yosuke Matsuda, the company’s representative director and president.
Matsuda highlighted three business domains that Square Enix will invest in the medium term. He mentioned that the company’s focus in 2023 will be on blockchain entertainment and gaming which will benefit from Square Enix’s full business development and investment efforts.
On the company’s 2023 roadmap, the letter mentioned several blockchain-based games which are inspired by original IP as being in development. The announcement involving blockchain games was expected since 2022. Square Enix also called for worldwide investors to join its efforts to develop stakes in blockchain startups that show promise.
Square Enix admitted that the crypto market experienced an extremely volatile year. However, it expressed confidence in Web3’s future. Matsuda wrote that blockchain produced both turmoil and exhilaration and he hopes that blockchain gaming is the next step in growing the initiative starting in 2023.
Final Fantasy’s designer began to invest in blockchain-based gaming in 2018. Square Enix launched an NFT collection of digital stickers called Shi-San-Sei Million Arthur on the LINE blockchain, in October 2021. This represented the first try to enter the NFT market. In November 2022, the company announced that it will definitely enter the field of blockchain gaming while announcing token economics added to Square Enix games.
