Yuga Labs, the owner of CryptoPunks intellectual property (IP), has announced the upcoming release of an official book dedicated to the iconic NFT project. In collaboration with design studio Zak Group, known for its work on Nike’s “Icons” book and Virgil Abloh’s designs, the book will delve into the details of each of the 10,000 Ethereum-based avatars known as CryptoPunks. Set to be released in the winter, the book aims to showcase the artwork of these influential pixelated characters and their significant impact on the NFT art movement.
Zak Kyes, the Creative Director at Zak Group, described CryptoPunks as a fusion of art, design, and the internet in the 21st century. The book, viewed as an all-in-one user manual, archive, and catalogue raisonné, will feature contributions from the original creators of CryptoPunks, Matt Hall and John Watkinson, along with renowned digital artists and community members.
Yuga Labs plans to involve the community in the book’s creation process and incorporate “untold stories” and content sourced from the official CryptoPunks Discord and Twitter. The project has seen immense success since its launch in 2017, generating over $2.1 billion in trading volume and reaching a record sale of $23.7 million for a single CryptoPunk. While the floor price of CryptoPunks has declined from its peak, the NFTs still hold significant value, with prices starting at around $89,000 worth of ETH on secondary markets.
Yuga Labs acquired the CryptoPunks IP from Larva Labs in March 2021 and subsequently granted commercialization rights to the holders of CryptoPunks. The project continues to gain historical importance and has even made NFT donations to art museums. The upcoming book will serve as a comprehensive tribute to CryptoPunks, documenting its evolution and impact on the NFT landscape.
