Mastercard has unveiled an innovative soccer trivia game for the 2023/2024 UEFA Champions League season, integrating non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to offer fans a chance to win match tickets while showcasing their league expertise. Developed in collaboration with MoonPay, the game allows Mastercard customers to engage in soccer-themed trivia challenges using free NFT passes provided through the “Pass to Priceless” platform.
Launching 30 minutes before each Tuesday night UEFA Champions League match starting February 13, the game invites participants to collect branded NFT passes minted on Polygon, an Ethereum scaling network. Players can then answer questions related to Champions League history and statistics, with winners of each round earning match tickets and climbing a season-long leaderboard. The top-ranking player by the April 30 semi-finals will secure tickets to the prestigious Champions League Final at Wembley Stadium in London.
MoonPay, along with its creative agency Otherlife, is responsible for developing the technology behind Mastercard’s NFT-driven experience. This collaboration stems from the partnership announced by MoonPay and Mastercard in October, focusing on Web3 initiatives aimed at enhancing customer engagement and interaction.
Beatrice Cornacchia, Mastercard’s executive vice president of marketing and communications in Europe, expressed enthusiasm for leveraging the Pass to Priceless platform to harness the passion and knowledge of football fans. Open to Mastercard cardholders in various countries including the United States, United Kingdom, France, Spain, and Brazil, the Champions League trivia contest is set to run until the June 1 final, offering an exciting opportunity for soccer enthusiasts to immerse themselves in the thrill of the game.
